Ann Dahlen is a self-described “behavior nerd”

who has been fascinated by what makes animals tick nearly all her life.

INVESTED IN BEHAVIOR

Long before becoming a professional dog trainer, Ann began her education in animal training, and behavior, by attending top animal-related conferences like Karen Pryor’s Clicker Expo, International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, and the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, to learn from the world’s leading experts. Along with gaining unique insight into animal behavior, she discovered the many benefits of humane, science-based, positive reinforcement training methods. She attends many continuing education conferences each year to stay up to date.

ANN’S BEEN WHERE YOU ARE

But for Ann, the human side of dog training is just as important, and she has a unique understanding of the frustrations that dog owners often face. Prior to becoming a trainer, she dealt with her own challenging dog, a Border Collie named Lefty. Although his “issues” were stressful and exasperating, she wasn’t about to give up. Instead, she worked closely with professional dog trainers who would also become great friends, supporters, and mentors. Under their guidance, Ann learned how to make training fun and effective by combining her knowledge of animal behavior with positive reinforcement training methods. By working as a team, Lefty’s behavior improved and they were laughing together a whole lot more.

NO JUDGMENT, JUST RESULTS

That experience was the catalyst for Ann’s decision to transition from the corporate world to professional dog trainer. Today, her goal is to help others laugh with their dogs, too, while finding effective solutions for the challenges they face. But rather than just focusing on sit, stay and come, Ann has learned that training is far more effective and long lasting when she takes a “whole dog” approach.

BASED ON DOG PROFESSIONAL SARAH STREMMING’S BEHAVIORAL WELLNESS PHILOSOPHY, ANN’S APPROACH FOCUSES ON FOUR ASPECTS THAT MAKE FOR A HAPPY DOG:

  • EXERCISE: Regular exercise – both physical and mental – strengthens a dog’s body and mind.
  • NUTRITION: Because nutrition is the foundation for a healthy body and a bright mind, it’s important to check labels and do research. After all, humans can’t function on junk food alone and neither can dogs!
  • ENRICHMENT: Dogs, no matter their age or abilities, need to stay active and engaged. Fun and creative games can help a shy dog come out of its shell or help re-focus a rowdy Rover.
  • COMMUNICATION: Training is the pathway to great communication. When a dog and their human clearly understand what they need from each other, it’s easier to fast-forward to the fun!

This unique take on training translates into a more enjoyable, exciting and fulfilling experience for everyone. So whether your new puppy needs basic obedience or you’re working with a dog who has difficult behavior issues, Ann can help you banish the stress, bring the fun and live a happier, healthier life with your best friend.
